David Louie (he/him) is a lawyer whose practice focuses on resolving disputes in a wide range of workplace issues in the public and private sectors in both provincial and federal jurisdictions. He has conducted investigations and workplace assessments for several municipal clients, including fire departments and other public services. David is known for his personable, empathetic approach; strong background in investigations, mediations, and dispute resolution; and thoughtful sensitivity to the experiences of all participants. His practice also includes workplace assessments, facilitation, and coaching. He is an educator and speaker on investigations, workplace law, and human resources best practices.
Before joining Hawkins Lang & Price, he worked at a workplace investigation law firm.

Investigator
David conducts workplace investigations in both provincial and federal jurisdictions, including matters involving bullying and harassment, sexual harassment, and other forms of misconduct.
Mediator
David brings a practical, creative, and personable approach to dispute resolution. He has an extensive background in workplace dispute resolution, including acting as counsel in mediations regarding grievance arbitration and Labour Relations Board disputes. As a mediator, David takes a direct and transparent approach that encourages parties to reach beyond their comfort zones to resolve impasses.
Trainer
David provides training on workplace law issues, including labour relations, human rights, and the investigation process. He takes a practical and interactive approach to delivering engaging education to both employees and management.
Workplace Assessor
David conducts workplace environmental assessments to better understand the unique nuances of workplace dynamics. By delving deep into the culture of an organization, David identifies themes, diagnoses issues, and offers practical recommendations to address a wide variety of workplace challenges.
Labour Relations Coach
David is engaged by employers and unions to provide labour relations coaching that supports respectful, productive communications and dispute resolution among parties who have challenges with their labour-management relationship. He immerses himself in the parties’ operations and meets with key stakeholders to understand their challenges. Drawing on his grievance arbitration experience, he attends labour management and grievance meetings to facilitate dialogue and offer timely, constructive feedback.

David’s background consists of an exclusive career in workplace law. In addition to his workplace investigations experience, he was a lawyer at one of Western Canada’s leading workplace law firms, practicing across labour and employment law, including human rights, privacy, and workplace health and safety.
He also brings extensive in-house labour relations experience from two large public-sector employers’ associations. As senior legal counsel at a healthcare employers’ association, he appeared regularly in significant arbitration, mediation, and Labour Relations Board proceedings. Playing a key role in the negotiation, administration, and litigation of multiple province-wide multi-employer collective agreements, David is recognized as a trusted advisor to clients, while fostering a positive and collegial relationship with unions and third parties. David has also conducted complex legal and labour relations research for a public-school employers’ association.
During law school, he studied abroad at the University of Amsterdam, focusing on European and international labour law.
